MAKE YOUR OWN BOARD – COURSES

The Surfboard Studio - MYOB Surfboard Courses
The Surfboard Studio - MYOB Courses

The Surfboard Studio offers the Make Your Own Surfboard course for nearly the price of a brand new production board. Over two consecutive Saturdays, we provide you with all of the materials, tools and live instruction necessary to create a custom surfboard. Upon completion, the surfboard is yours to keep, and the lessons provide you with the ability and knowledge to shape additional surfboards on your own, and go on to experiment with different elements of the shaping process.

THESE COURSES ARE RUN ONCE A MONTH – MAXIMUM 10 COURSES PER YEAR.

COURSE INFORMATION

We run our courses over 2 days – essentially 7 & 10 hour sessions.  These sessions are run on Saturdays from 9am – 4pm and 7am – 5pm, requiring participants to attend 2 sessions to complete their surfboard.  Maximum 5 students per course.

DAY 1
MODULE: Shaping
HOURS: 9:00am to 4:00pm

Day One begins with the basics of surfboard design. You will also be familiarised with the shaping bay and all the tools and techniques used in the craft. We will lead you through the intricacies of shaping and design, including planning shapes, bottom contours, nose and tail, rocker lines, deck shapes and rail shapes. We will discuss fin and plug installation, including various theories around fin positioning on different boards, and how their placement may affect performance.

DAY 2
MODULE: Glassing
HOURS: 07:00am to 05:00pm

Day Two of the course will proceed into the glassing stage, where you will learn about various techniques and materials used in glassing a surfboard. Optional extras like adding logos and colours to your resin are done at this stage, before cutting your own cloth, mixing the resin and laminating your own board. Then on to sanding and pro-finishing, and you’ll be ready to get it in the water!
